The Secret to Capturing New Leads through Websites in the Philippines

Just before starting to write this article, I remembered that our last visit to Manila was almost 6 months ago.

Our favourite city is Quezon City, even though BGC is the place to be for business.

During our stay, we tried multiple methods to identify how the community would react to specific advertising platforms, and we realised people do quick Google searches for almost everything.

Have you heard about the Chauvet Cave in France? Early humans etched stories of their lives onto its walls.

These weren’t just drawings but expressions of their identity, struggles, and victories.

Modern storytelling has taken on countless new forms, but the essence remains the same: connecting, inspiring, and engaging.

When it comes to web design, storytelling isn’t just a nice-to-have feature; it’s the backbone of creating experiences for your audience that they can relate to and participate in.

Without it, even the most visually stunning websites fall flat.

Let’s explore the power of storytelling in web design, particularly for businesses in Manila looking to stand out in a saturated market.

The Power of Storytelling in Web Design

Why Stories Matter in Design

Humans are hardwired to respond to stories from childhood, from bedtime stories to roleplaying.

Researchers at Harvard Business School have found that storytelling activates more brain areas than mere facts or statistics ever could.

A story makes information relatable and memorable, unlike bland, impersonal content.

In web design, storytelling provides a narrative framework for users to navigate a site.

Think of it as guiding them through an adventure where every click builds their connection to your brand.

You may wonder if you must impress new users within 3 seconds of visiting your website to retain them. Do they have time to read stories because people often scan and pick what they want to read?

What Happens Without a Story

Have you ever stumbled upon a website that looked great but left you feeling… nothing? Don’t mockingly think, “Ah, just like your old website.”

That’s what happens when storytelling is absent. People love a grandiose story with a purpose to work towards.

A visually appealing website without a clear narrative can confuse visitors, dilute your brand message, and, worst of all, fail to bring in new leads.

Building Emotional Connections Through Storytelling

How Emotions Drive Engagement

I still remember a story I read a decade ago from a book called “Art of Possibility” by Benjamin Zander and Rosamund Stone Zander because of a story in the book.

The story was about Two shoe salesmen who were sent to Africa; one looked at the people and told HQ that the situation was hopeless; nobody wore shoes, and the other did quite the opposite. He informed HQ that it was a fantastic opportunity because nobody had shoes.

Why am I telling stories here? Well, a Stanford University study revealed that people are 22 times more likely to remember a fact wrapped in a story.

Emotions are the gateway to engagement.

For example, an eco-friendly startup in Manila might tell the story of how its founders grew up near polluted rivers and wanted to make a difference.

The Founders Story

One of our founders, the Floppy Disk Hustler, comes from humble beginnings.

In his teenage years, he started a small business renting explicit images downloaded from a dial-up internet connection to his village boys in a Floppy Disk for a limited time of 7 days.

To extend, they needed to pay him for another week of rent fees to keep the Floppy Disk. He used his earnings to buy snacks for his sister and himself on their way to extra classes after school until his dad found out and ceased the operation.

Eventually, he went on to found a successful, “legitimate” business, which you might know as HypeX.

He followed his passion for information technology, self-taught digital marketing, and started helping others make more money using digital platforms.

Talk about entrepreneurs being born, right?

This type of narrative doesn’t just inform; it inspires.

When users feel something, they’re more likely to take action, sign up for a newsletter or purchase a product.

Finding Your Brand’s Story

Even if your business seems ordinary, there’s always a story to tell.

Start by asking yourself the following,

What problem are you solving?
Why did you start this business?
How have you impacted your customers’ lives?

For example, run a web design agency in Manila. You might share how you helped a small company in Quezon City transition to e-commerce during the pandemic, ensuring its survival.

Incorporating Storytelling in Web Design

Structure Your Website Like a Narrative

A website can mimic a classic story arc,

Introduction: The homepage grabs attention and introduces your brand.
Conflict: Highlight customer pain points on a services page.
Resolution: Show how your offerings solve their problems through testimonials and case studies.

Use Visuals to Reinforce Your Story

High-quality images and videos are key. For instance, if you’re a resort in Manila, don’t just list amenities—show a family enjoying their stay, complete with sunrise views and heartfelt moments.

Leverage Microcopy for Impact

Microcopy, like button text or tooltips, can tell a story, too. Instead of “Submit,” try “Let’s Start Your Journey.” These small touches make users feel involved in your narrative.

Case Studies: Storytelling in Action

Donor Network
The Donor Network created a humorous campaign that turned a serious topic, organ donation, into a relatable story. They paired real human emotions with quirky storytelling, making the message unforgettable.

Barbie
Facing criticism, Barbie reinvented its narrative to focus on empowering girls rather than promoting unrealistic beauty standards. The brand’s storytelling shift didn’t just improve its image, it also skyrocketed sales.

HypeX Example

You might be aware of one of the largest conglomerates rooted in Sri Lanka and expanding to multiple countries, including the Philippines, known as LOLC. AgStar PLC is one of their subsidiaries. We redesigned and positioned the company on the shared values of Triple’s bottom line and revamped its website.

The Role of Creative Agencies in Storytelling

If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of crafting your brand’s story, you’re not alone.

Creative agencies, particularly those specializing in web design, can help you uncover your unique narrative and translate it into an engaging digital experience.

We at HypeX Manila start by understanding your brand’s history, values, and goals.

Then, we weave these elements into your web design, creating a site that not only looks good but also tells a story that captivates your audience.

Conclusion

Storytelling is the heart of effective web design.

It’s what makes a website functional and a captivating lead magnet.

Whether you’re a startup in Manila or an established business looking to refresh your online presence, embracing storytelling can set you apart in a competitive market.

So, what’s your brand’s story?

Let’s craft it together and share it with the world.
